Flying to New York for Fashion Week was a dream come true for six Indonesian designers showing for the first time on the Indonesian Diversity SS18 Runway. New York Fashion Week: First Stage is a new platform that gives global designers the opportunity to show at NYFW, whether they are debuting in the U.S. for the first time or looking to make new global connections and further their presence.

Beautiful handcrafted fabrics and embroideries glided down the runway unlike anything industry members had ever seen before, though the details and level of craftsmanship are customary of high-end Indonesian fashion. Guests were wowed as theatrical beats pumped through the room and models walked impeccably adorned by handcrafted Indonesian elements.

Each designer saw this show as an opportunity to bring Indonesian design to the runways of New York to embody cultural inclusion in a tough social climate.

DIAN PELANGI

Geometric prints and beaded brocades permeated Dian Pelangi’s bold collection. Menswear-inspired suiting pieces in unexpected bright colors brought to life the hustle and bustle of New York City. Subway tile-like embellishments highlighted waistlines and shoulders and gave creative flair to straight silhouettes. 

BARLI ASMARA

Barli Asmara showed a gorgeous collection of white lace cold shoulder dresses and gowns. Inspired by purity and Middle Eastern architecture, these layered and laced up pieces were complimented by bejeweled statement earrings. A full pearl embellished gown stole the show with its powerful turtleneck structure and beaded waistline. 

MELIA WIJAYA

Melia Wijaya dug all the way to her roots to create a collection of impressive garments tied to the famous Indonesian folklore, Sawunggaling. The story praises the creative and full of energy rooster and peacock. In an effort to preserve the true meaning, Wijaya sent feather adorned headpieces, gowns and separates down the catwalk in earthy tones. Caged boning created an hourglass frame on a gorgeous few gowns and pants. 

CATHERINE NJOO

Larger than life, yet dainty gold headpieces sat atop Catherine Njoo’s models. Rich, gold embroideries and beaded batik fabrics crafted into beautiful forms created an ultra luxurious wave over the entire collection. Rounding out Njoo’s runway was a jaw-dropping, egg-shaped gold headpiece that opened and closed to unveil a dimly lit pagoda. 

VIVI ZUBEDI

Vivi Zubedi believes in a world of equal love between all cultures and crafted an incredible collection to hone in on that theme. A rich color palette with subtle prints was embellished with branded patchwork that read “Makkah Madinah Jannah”. Also, making a bold political statement was her floor length abbaya embellished with a beautiful “All Colors Matter” and her use of various size models dressed in hijab, including plus size. 

DORIS DORTHEA

All designers accessorized with handbags by the infamous Doris Dorthea, top celebrity go-to designer for custom handbags. The brand prides itself on the use of exotic skins and leather. Vibrant colors collided with exotic skin in beautifully crafted, structured mini bags.

NICKLAU designer Nicholas Lau, a 19 year old from Hong Kong, avoids the spring cliches of florals, flirty hemlines, and vivid color with his self-titled “WALK OF SHAME” collection.

The ‘walk of shame’ is a popular phrase for the morning after a sexual encounter, walking back home from another person’s place wearing the same clothes from the night before.  

NICKLAU’s collection utilizes this to bring to life the concept of a party girl in New York beginning the walk of shame back home. Missing articles of clothing, she unabashedly borrows pieces of her partner’s wardrobe. The result? A sporty, yet elegant look. 

NICKLAU keeps the overall collection simple, dipped in dark neutrals, yet feminine with form-fitting, belted pieces. Opting for touches of pinstripe and leather, one could very well mistake this for a fall collection. While an intriguing concept, the potential of the collection, including the retro film vibe of the photos, outweighed its execution. NICKLAU seems to have tried to take the safe route with these pieces; here’s hoping for Lau to reach his full potential.

Born within the depths of London’s underground scene, MCMA is all about two things: fun and inspiration. An unabashedly feminine collection for S/S ‘18, the colors popped and the texture sizzled.  Telling you to take a ride on the “bold” side, MCMA celebrated vibrant, bright personalities by mixing gorgeous tones and unique patterns. Rethink those thoughts of, “I’m too old for that…” in these pieces, filled to the brim with youthful energy. With a bit of casual, evening, and everything in between, MCMA has us wondering how we can sneak in these pieces into our winter wardrobes. Because we just cannot wait.

Inspired by an Edouard Manet painting, Romanian designer Adelina Rusu successfully jumped right into the heart of its innocence.

Taking the risk of using just one pattern and one color for contrast, Rusu painted her collection head-to-toe in a soothing periwinkle.

With a single glance, one can see the energy poured into her work is woven through every thread of every piece, oozing fun, excitement, and a childlike adoration. 

Remaining unrestricted by garments, or life, Rusu’s cinched waists with billowy silhouettes give off a sense of freedom—the idea that while wearing these clothes, you can fly into unknown waters.

If you are always in a rush or on the go–or even if you only occasionally travel–you need to have a few essentials to make sure your journey is easy and care-free. Obviously, we’ll always need our whole beauty regimen (It’s just the way us girls operate, isn’t it?), but the fact that there’s only so much you can carry means you have to narrow down to just a few essentials that will be in your bag at all (travel) times.

Here’s our list.

Traveling Trifles

Evidently, you won’t be leaving the house without a couple things, like a lighter (if you’re a smoker), earphones, and of course, your phone charger. Adding on to that list, pack your bodum mug so you can have a sip of coffee whenever you want, wherever you are. It’s easy to carry, and it won’t spill or make a mess.

Always carry a package of wet wipes. They can serve as both a simple refresher and a makeup remover; however, they’re not a substitute. Try to use your regular makeup remover whenever possible, because it does a more thorough job. Don’t use them as your only self-cleaning method, but rather as a first aid during those long, traveling hours.

No matter whether you’re on the road or not, skincare is essential. A small bottle of cleanser is a must. Moreover, it’ll keep your skin clean and radiant, making you look fresh, rested, and ready to tackle another day of traveling.

A moisturizer is another absolute must-have, since you’ll probably be spending a lot of time outside. Keeping your skin well hydrated is simply something you should do to prevent impurities. Moreover, a good hand cream to protect your hands will always be useful. You can never know for sure what the weather will be, but a few dabs of the cream can be a true lifesaver. 

Unfortunately, no matter how amazing traveling is, it can also mean sweating like there’s no tomorrow (especially if you are traveling without AC or in extreme heat). To avoid nasty pit stains, be sure to pack a deodorant that can keep you feeling and smelling fresh for a long time. And try using the wet wipes first!

밖에서 보내는 시간이 많을테니 모이스쳐라이저는 필수 아이템이다. 피부를 항상 촉촉하게 유지하는 것은 중요하다. 당김이 느껴지지 않게 손을 관리하는 것도 중요하다. 여행갈 때 날씨가 어떻게 될 지 모르니 크림을 조금이라도 바르는 것은 정말 생명의 은인 같은 존재로 느껴질 것이다.

여행을 다니는 것은 정말 멋진 경험이지만 날씨가 더우면 땀이 나는 것은 어쩔 수 없다. 겨드랑이에 얼룩을 피하려면 물티슈를 사용하여 닦아 낸 후 오래 동안 신선한 향기가 날 수 있도록 데오도란트를 사용해야 한다.

A girl can never know for sure how long her makeup will stay in place, which makes for a solid reason to always have your favorite mascara with you for touch ups. Thankfully, mascara has tiny packaging these days so they fit any travel kit nicely.

Setting sprays will become your new best friend (if they haven’t already), since they keep your makeup intact. Their long-lasting effect is perfect for those long days when you don’t have a chance to fix your makeup.

And luckily, finding a good lipstick nowadays isn’t a big endeavor.. But it certainly requires some skill. Then again, you can pick a few colors for the road, seeing as they can fit almost anywhere.

Finally, mini makeup palettes are perhaps one of the best things you can bring along on a road trip. They are literally designed to fit into any bag, and yet, they lack nothing. They hold your must-have shades and will surely come in handy.

Commes Des Garcons mastermind Rei Kawakubo’s 3rd location is more downtown NYC in feel than the more upscale ambiance of DSM’s London location. Also part of the strategy to appeal to New Yorkers, the multiplex offers chic, high fashion pieces with designer streetwear, and the menswear and womenswear merchandise is mixed throughout the store to be more unisex for true fashion enthusiasts

Created in 2012, this app is all about the finer points of photography. Able to edit RAW files in addition to JPG, Snapseed is a must for anyone looking to bring their photos to life.

Ever been frustrated with your place in the Instagram universe? If you fall under the umbrella of “social influencers”, you know the struggle is real: Filters not coming out quite right, feed looking kind of meh. Not getting enough likes or comments, and seeing other users’ accounts growing exponentially while you stagnate or move at a crawl. And you know that followers translate into money and sponsors.

Though Instagram’s initial intent was to allow users to share moments and memories with their friends, both brands and users quickly figured out how to monetize their accounts by showcasing products or services on their feed. Instagram has become the app of choice for getting famous, earning money, or running a business. 

The app has undergone multiple revisions and redesigns since its inception, especially after being bought out by Facebook in 2012. Beyond cosmetic changes to the icon or feed displays, updates included new features like live streaming, shoppable features, direct messaging, Insta Stories (Facebook’s answer to Snapchat), and numerous algorithm changes. 

The algorithm changes are particularly important, as influencers who use Instagram as an income source study the algorithm changes religiously. By understanding the algorithm, users can somewhat predict the number of likes or comments a picture will receive—Timing is critical. Targeting certain demographics and time zones can lead to higher commissions, and if an influencer is being paid simply for the number of likes, understanding the nature of the algorithm can help get greater exposure. All of this takes a lot of hard work, with many hours spent on trial and error. The algorithm changes can wreak havoc on the lives of Instagrammers, and getting back into the rhythm of things can take weeks, even months.

An algorithm change happened a few months back, and most bloggers are still trying to figure out how to recover their engagement levels, wondering, “What is really going on?  Why aren’t we growing anymore?” Even regular users don’t see posts from their favorite accounts, which means less engagement and decreasing followers.

Throughout these tumultuous times, some influencers have somehow managed to remain unaffected by the algorithm changes and continue to grow—Are they somehow immune? These influencers may have charisma, beauty, or talent… They may be great marketing strategists finding new opportunities. Or?

Of course, it is no secret that many influencers, brands, celebrities, and the media regularly use tools and methods to grow their numbers, from individual bloggers paying a few bucks to international brands spending hundreds of thousands of dollars.  The quality of these followers is somewhat questionable, as millions of fake accounts have come into existence. 

Instagram has been trying to crack down on this burgeoning industry.  A couple of years ago, Instagram terminated untold numbers of fake accounts, embarrassing many celebrities in the process.  The sudden drop in numbers exposed the magnitude of the fake-follower epidemic. 

Why is having big numbers so important? Many brands still value sheer numbers and award influencers in the hope that it will help the brand gain potential customers. Sure, this approach can yield results. Many bloggers are truly influential, and their readers trust their opinions enough to make purchases. Unfortunately, this situation fuels an underground system of buying fake likes, followers, and engagement; the desire to grow and get the best sponsors is a powerful motivator. Even though many brands continue to focus on the number, others are catching on to the Instagram charade. 

While some companies are developing specialized software to perform their own analytics, there are commonly available tools online to know if a blogger or influencer is truly legit. Here are a few ways to know if a blogger isn’t being completely truthful:

1. Social Blade. It’s a tool that allows you to check any influencer and see how fast they grow, how many people follow them on a daily basis, and how many people they follow or unfollow. You can even see graphs that display trend lines of their growth.  A line that appears like a staircase usually means something is up, most likely that the influencer is buying followers. Natural growth is usually a smooth line.

2. Check their followers. It is very easy to see if an influencer is truly “real!” If you see no profile pics or only male accounts, this is a huge red flag. Typically, large numbers of males are not a target demographic (unless it’s a male influencer, of course!), which means the influencer will not bring any sales.

3. Watch to see if they engage with their followers. It is understandable that larger influencers don’t have the time to reply to every single comment; however, if a blogger has less than 250K, it’s possible he or she can find time to occasionally reply to questions. Engagement is a trait brands increasingly want to quantify and shows the influencer cares about his or her audience.

4. Infiltrate an Instapod. Instapods are commenting groups where influencers agree to support one another with likes and comments. It shows engagement, making the blogger look legitimate. An inherent problem here is that Instapods help obscure a blogger’s true clout or engagement with a wide audience. It may be tough breaking in the circle of trust though—These groups are closely managed.

5. Quality of the comments. There are a lot of different commenting bots out there.  These bots simply add random comments to give the appearance of engagement, but they are easy to spot. Telltale signs are off-topic responses, or simple one-word comments that generically apply to everything. It’s worth pointing out that many bloggers will leave one-word comments, but if you really do some snooping, you can figure out if an influencer is employing a bot based on repetition of the same comments.

.How long will this go on? Recently many tools for getting followers, comments, and likes, such as Instagress, Massplannner, and FollowLiker have been shut down.  Something else must fill the void. Is this the beginning of the end for this shadow industry? With Facebook’s uncanny ability to find revenue opportunities, things will most certainly change in the future. Don’t be caught in this impending implosion.

Brands cannot be naïve forever, and the best outcome for the industry would be to appropriately match brands to influencers in tune with the brand’s message.

So for all the bloggers and influencers out there worrying about your growth: Our advice is to stop stressing out! Continue to be yourself and find healthy ways to grow and push yourself to be creative. But bloggers, brands, and followers—We must all collectively care about content and quality to prevent Instagram from devolving into one continuous fake feed.

인스타그램을 사용하며 좌절감을 느껴본 적이 있는가? ‘소셜 인플루엔서’라면 필터가 잘 적용 되지 않는 다거나 사람들의 의견이 별로인 점에 대해 힘든 점을 잘 알고 있을 것이다. 점점 커져가고 있는 다른사람의 계정을 보면 왜 내 계정은 그렇게 크지 못하는 것인가 생각할 수 도 있다. 팔로워 수가 많을수록 돈도 벌고 스폰서도 받을 수 있기 때문이다. 

원래 이스타그램은 사용자들이 친구와 추억과 일상, 그리고 생활을 공유하기 위해 만들어진 앱 었지만 브랜드와 사용자들은 자신들이 제공하는 상품과 서비스를 올림으로써 이것을 어떻게 화폐화 할 수 있는지 알아 냈으며 인스타그램은 이들에게 돈을 벌 수 있는 방법이 되었다. 

인스타그램은 처음 시작된 이후 여러 가지 변화를 겪었는데, 표면적인 변화외에 라이브 스트리밍, 쇼핑 기능, 다이렉트, 미국 어플 스냅챗에 대항하기 위한 인스타 스토리가 추가되고 다양한 알고리즘이 변경되었다.  

이 다양한 변화들 중 알고리즘 변화가 가장 중요한 요소인데 인스타그램으로 돈을 버는 소셜 인플루엔서들은 각 알고리즘 변화에 세심한 주의를 기울여야 한다. 알고리즘을 이해하면 각 사진마다 ‘좋아요’ 몇 개와 댓글 몇 개를 받을 수 있을지도 알 수 있다. 인스타그램 포스트는 타이밍이기 때문이다. 적합한 대상에 도달하고 ‘좋아요’가 많으면 돈을 더 벌 수 있지만, 이것은 쉽지 않은 일이며 지속적인 시행착오를 통해 배우게 된다. 알고리즘이 변화하면 인스타그램의 사용자들은 몇 일, 혹은 몇 달에 걸쳐 다시 새로운 알고리즘에 익숙해 져야 하고 이것은 쉽지 않은 일이다. 

몇 개월 전 인스타그램의 알고리즘이 또 변화했지만 지금까지 대부분 블로거들이 어떻게 engagement를 회복할 수 있는지 찾아보고 있다. 그들은 도대체 어떤 일이 벌어 지고 있는 것인지, 자신의 계정이 왜 커지지 않는 것인지 궁금해 하고 있다. 보통 인스타그램 사용자들은 자신들이 팔로우 하는 사람의 계정을 확인하지 않아 engagement와 팔로워 수가 낮아지고 있는 상황이다. 

하지만 이러한 상황에서도 몇 몇의 인플루엔서들은 여전히 팔로워수를 유지하고 자신의 계정을 키워 나가고 있다. 그들은 마치 인스타그램의 알고리즘 변화에 영향을 받고 있지 않은 것 같다. 이들은 카리스마가 있고, 뷰티, 재능이 있어서 그런가? 마케팅 전력가인가? 아니면 다른 이유가 있는 것일까? 

인풀루엔서 브랜드, 연예인, 미디어 모두 그들의 인스타그램 계좌를 키우기 위해 다양한 방법을 사용하는 것은 더 이상 비밀이 아니다. 블로거부터 국제적인 브랜드까지 팔로워를 사는데 이 팔로워들이 진짜인지 가짜인지는 확실하지 않다. 

인스타그램은 가짜의 팔로워를 사는 것을 엄중하게 단속한다다. 약 2년 전에 인스타그램이 엄청나게 많은 수의 가짜의 팔로들의 계정을 취소하여 팔로워들을 구매한 몇몇 유명인들을 부끄럽게 만들었다. 그들의 팔로워 수가 급락 했기 때문이다.  

팔로워들은 많이 가지고 있는 것은 왜 중요한가? 대부분 브랜드는 팔로워 수에만 관심을 가지고 있고 인풀루엔서들게 돈을 줄 때 브랜드가 고객들의 마음 끌 수 있기를 바라다. 몇몇 블로거들은 실제로 영향력이 있으며 그들의 구독자들에게 영향을 끼친다. 하지만 이러한 형상들 때문에 스폰서를 잡기위해 가짜의 좋아요, 팔로워, engagement를 살 수 있는 시스템이 만들어 졌다. 대부분 브랜드들이 아직도 팔로워 수에만 집중을 하고 있지만 다른 브랜드는 인스타그램의 만들어진 수치가 어떤 것인지 인지하고 있다. 

몇몇 회사는 분석을 위해 그들의 전용 소프트웨어를 개발하기도 했지만 인터넷에서 사용할 수 있는 기술을 이용하면 블로거나 인풀루엔서가 합법적인지 쉽게 알 수 있다. 아래와 같이 몇 가지 방법을 소개한다. 

1. 소셜 블레이드 (Social Blade). 블로거의 성장, 하루에 몇 명이 팔로우 하는지 확인할 있고 블로거 자신이 몇 명을 팔로우 하고 언팔로우 하는 지도 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 성장의 추세도 확인 가능하다. 추세는 계단 모양의 선인데 이 선을 통해 블로거가 팔로워들은 사는지 아닌지 확인 할 수 있다. 자연스러운 성장은 대각선 모양으로 나타난다.

2. 그들의 팔로워들을 확인하라. 만약 팔로워들의 프로필 사진이 없다면 이것은 가짜 계정이며 여성 인플루엔서의 팔로워가 대부분 남자라면 이러한 것도 이상하다. 남자들은 여성 인풀루언서의 고객이 아니기 때문이다. 이러한 남성 고객들은 구매력도 높지 않을 것이다. 

3. 팔로워와 소통하는 것도 확인할 수 있다. 인기가 많은 블로거는 당연히 모든 댓글에 대답을 할 수는 없다. 하지만 팔로워 25만명 미만이라면 가끔씩 질문에 대답을 할 수 있을 것이다. 브랜드가 engagement 는 브랜드가 수량화하고 싶으면서 인풀루언서들이 그들의 팔로워들을 신경 쓰고 있다는 것을 보여주는 것이다. 

4. 인스타포드 사용. 인스타포드는 인풀루언서로 구성된 그룹이 좋아요와 댓글을 남겨주며 서로를 응원해 주는 것이다. Engagement 를 보여줌으로써 블로그가 ‘진짜’라는 것을 보여준다. 사람들은 블로거들이 실제로 미치는 영향을 확인하기 힘들다. 인스타포드는 블로거 그룹으로 이루어진 집단이기에 결속력으로 인해 사람들이 실제 블로거가 진실인지 아닌지 구분하기 힘들게 한다. 

5. 댓글의 퀄리티. 인스타그램 사용자의 포스트에 자동 댓글을 남기는 다양한 프로그램이 많은데 이것은 쉽게 알아볼 수 있다. 댓글이 주제를 벗어나고, 하나의 단어로 이루어져 있거나  ‘소통해요~’와 같이 어떠한 상황에서도 사용할 수 있는 댓글인 경우 자동 댓글일 확률이 높다. 많은 블로거들이 한 단어로 이루어진 댓글을 남기지만 조금만 더 자세히 보면 그들이 반복하게 사용하는 동일한 댓글들을 통해 인풀루언서들이 프로그램을 사용하는지 아닌지 알 수 있다. 

언제까지 이러한 현상들이 반복될까? 요즘에는 Instagress, Massplannner, FollowLiker 같은 팔로워, 좋아요, 댓글을 모이는 프로그램들이 종료되었다. 하지만 또 다른 무언가가 이런 공허를 채워야 할 것이다. 이것은. 종말의 시작인가? 페이스북은 계속 돈을 버는 방법을 찾을 것이기에 앞으로도 계속 변화를 일으킬 것이다. 

브랜드는 계속 무지할 수 없다. 솔직하게 말하면, 이 산업의 가장 좋은 결과는 브랜드 메시지와 동의하는 인플루언서가 브랜드와 연결하여 소통하는 것이다. 

성장 때문에 걱정되는 인플루언서들: 스트레스 받지마! 자연스럽게 행동하고 다른 성장할 수 있는 방법을 찾아보고 창조적인 것을 해보자. 그렇지만 블로거, 브랜드, 팔로워들이 진실성을 느끼기 위해서는항상 컨텐츠와 포스트의 쿼리티에 대해 신경 써야한다.
